![]() ![]() TWW: So Monkey Shoulder, owned by William Grant and Sons, is a blended malt. So this is all encapsulated in the personality of Monkey Shoulder. Obviously you like for it to taste good, but so much of it is more of an escape, and it’s fun, it’s a community, it’s this playfulness that I think that everybody enjoys and that’s part of why we enjoy going out to bars. Let’s completely challenge the conventions that everybody usually thinks of when they think of Scotch, and let’s kind of transcend this category. So we know that we’re going to give people great quality and great flavor, but we’re going to do it in a way that doesn’t have any pretension to it. We said, “what if we made a Scotch that’s super approachable, and that is made with the idea of mixing in cocktails behind it?” So let’s make it with really high quality liquid, and we’re going to do it with a hundred percent malt and no grain whiskey. And Scotch has always predominantly been a spirit that you think of, if you went back 10 or 15 years, where people would say, “You’re going to put Scotch in a cocktail?” They might reach across the bar and slap you.īut considering that Scotch is made upon highlighting different flavors and key characteristics from each barrel, and that blending those barrels to make something that is beautiful and enjoyable is almost is the same thing that we do with cocktails, it made sense for us to play in that space. There’s also newer cocktail creations such as the Show Me the Monkey, the Boulevardier #3, and the Monkey Jam Sour.So keeping true to what our passion and kind of knowledge is, we started to see a rise in bourbon, at the time, and a lot of bartenders moving to mixing cocktails with it, and having fun while mixing cocktails. You can find several drink recipes exclusively on the Monkey Shoulder website which includes their own rendition of classic cocktail favorites such as the Rob Roy and the Monkey Old Fashioned. These whiskies are matured in first fill ex-bourbon barrels and are vatted together for six months before bottling. This work-related affliction no longer exists, but the name remains as a tribute to their whisky heritage.īottled at 86 proof (43% ABV), Monkey Shoulder is a 100% malt whisky made from a blend of specially selected Scotch malt whiskies from William Grant & Son’s own line of whiskies including Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie. The use of the heavy shovels caused their arms to hang lower than normal, resembling what they endearingly dubbed as “monkey shoulders”. Many of these malt men of the past sustained arm strain injuries in this labor-intensive process. Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt Scotch Whisky gets its formal moniker from the traditional malt whisky making process wherein malt shovelers, better known as “malt men,” turned the malted barley by hand using large, heavy malt shovels. Initially launched in 2003, Monkey Shoulder Blended Scotch Whisky has since become one of the highest ranked whiskies from the Speyside region of Scotland. The resulting Batch 27, which was named Monkey Shoulder in tribute to William Grant’s whisky making heritage, was designed specifically for mixing. ![]() In the early 2000s, William Grant & Sons saw an opportunity to bring the Scotch experience to a wider audience by creating a whisky that would be ideal for use in hand-crafted cocktails.
